Cotehele Quay Gig Club is to host the first 'Tamar Challenge' on Saturday.

This is a pursuit race for traditional pilot gig boats of approximately nine miles from the Tamar Bridge to Cotehele Quay.

Crews from  Looe, Cattewater, Charlestown, Rame  and Tamar and Tavy based at Weir Quay will be taking part.

Organiser Jeremy Lawrence said: 'We're really looking forward to inviting crews down to see our beautiful stretch of river that we're so lucky to train on. The race is a first for the Tamar and we're hoping our Cotehele Quay crews will do well on their own patch.'

The best place for spectators to view the boats arriving at the finish line will be at Cotehele Quay at around 2.45pm – depending on how hard the crews row!

Spectators will also be able to see in action the Cream of Cornwall, one of only 1,000 boats to take part in the Royal Pageant 2012.
