Tavistock 4
Penzance 3
THE Lambs started brightly but despite Jarryd Kelly, Andy Sargent and Dan Pethick all finding themselves with early opportunities, they failed to make the break-through.
After 15 minutes Penzance found themselves in front as the Lambs defence decided to try and play the off-side trap and as they stepped, out Caspell, the Cornish Magpies winger, raced down the left-hand side and sent in a cross that was met by the on-rushing Tom Puterill who finished well at the near post leaving Andy Meeds with no chance.
Although the Lambs continued to have the greater share of possession it was the visitors who looked sharper and more dangerous going forward. On the stroke of half-time Dean Southcott was brought down 25 yards from the Penzance goal and from the resultant Paul Quinn free-kick that was fired low in to the Penzance penalty box, Andy Sargent reacted quickest to neatly sweep the ball home to send the teams in level at the break.
The home side started the second half brighter, but once again, were undone by some poor defending which let in Lewis Caspell to fire past Andy Meeds on 51 minutes to restore the visitors lead. Puterill was proving a constant menace for the Magpies and was unlucky not to increase their lead a few minutes later as he unleashed a shot that left Meeds stranded, but fortunately for the Tavistock goalkeeper, the ball cannoned off both posts before landing in his arms.
On 55 minutes Tavistock brought on former Lambs favourite Glyn Hobbs who had transferred back to the club from Plymouth Parkway the day before. His introduction seemed to deflate the young Penzance side and they were finding it hard to keep him quiet. On 72 minutes a neat move involving Dean Southcott and Jimmy Alexander resulted in the latter sending in a cross that was met in the six yard box by Andy Sargent, who sent a header in to the far corner of the net with the Magpies' keeper rooted to the spot.
Having got themselves back on level terms and with a chance of winning the game, the Lambs committed 'defensive suicide' with a number of catastrophic mistakes leading to Caspell running through and slotting the ball past Meeds to restore the visitors lead with only eight minutes remaining.
Two minutes later the home side had equalised after Paul Quinn's goal bound effort was punched away by Caspell in the Penzance penalty area and as a result he was given his marching orders. Sargent stepped up to completed his hat-trick from the spot.
On 86 minutes Tavistock took the lead when substitute Brett Walton sent in a cross from the left wing that found Sargent unmarked in the Penzance area and he headed the ball home to score his fourth and give all three points to the Lambs.
Despite the Lambs looking rusty at times, they could not be faulted for their attitude as they showed great character to pull off an unlikely victory, when they were staring defeat in the face.
