A COLLECTION of fascinating sporting pictures and newspaper cuttings from the late 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s has been passed on to Times Sport by reader Ivor Evely of Stoke Climsland.
A keen and talented sportsman, Ivor, now aged 79, played both for Stoke Climsland FC and the village’s cricket team and not without some success. During his time with the football team he was a prolific goalscorer but as mentioned in a Gazette report of 1956-57 Ivor played in ‘a team that claimed to have no stars — their main asset being tremendous team spirit.’
In one newspaper report of a match between Calstock and Stoke Climsland in the 1950s Ivor was described by the reporter — who did not know his name — as a ‘15-year-old boy wonder’ for coming on and scoring to help his side to a 3-1 away victory. Ivor was aged 21 at the time!
There was success on the cricket field too, when Ivor captained the Stoke Climsland CC team that beat Lifton by six wickets at Callington to lift the Isaac Foot Cup in 1961/2.
One of his footballing highlights was scoring a hat-trick in 1961 for a Plymouth and District East league team on tour in a 5-1 win over Highgate and Southgate XI in Hackney, London.
He was also one of a fine Stoke Climsland team that won the Plymouth Combination League division one winners Challenge Bowl, four years in a row (1964-67) and the Launceston Cup three times in a row (1965-67).
