Callington Town FC Ladies 6

Torquay United ladies 0

CALLINGTON ladies made it five wins and three draws from their last eight games in in all competitions, thanks to an emphatic win over Torquay.

Right from kick-off Torquay though came out firing. The visitors did not allow Callington to settle and did the early pressing with home goalkeeper Dani Harper twice getting shots away.

The home side were struggling to put their foot on the ball but still created two gilt-edged chances inside the opening 10 minutes – on both occasions Amy Hemingway was the creator but striker Jodie Smith could not hit the target. Only minutes later however, Smith atoned by heading home a superb cross from Hemingway. Callington gradually then begun to move the ball across the pitch with more confidence.

On 20 minutes they were 2-0 up thanks to another ball into the box by Hemingway. As the ball arrived at the back post, there was a scramble where two Torquay defenders collided, before Smith was on hand to prod the ball in from a yard out.

Ten minutes later Chloe Williams forced an outstanding save from Neave Gosling and Hemingway headed just a foot past the post.

Five minutes before the break, Callington had their third goal when Hemingway fed Eleri Griffiths who found the net with an excellent dipping shot from 20 yards.

Half-time saw the introduction of Keri-Ann Moxom and Kelly Phillips for Callington. Both made immediate impacts on the game from the restart, as they helped Callington dominate.

They nearly had their fourth when a cross found Williams; the striker looked to have found the top-corner but the ball cannoned off the up-right and ran away to safety for the visitors.

Soon enough it was 4-0 when Sam Veal received a short-corner and curled a stunning effort into the top corner from an acute angle. Just four minutes later it was another corner that caused Torquay problems. This time Gemma Farley did her usual trick of whipping the ball into the goal at the far post directly from the corner.

Ten minutes from time Farley grabbed her second and Callington’s sixth when she stepped up for a free-kick 25 yards from goal. The midfielder bent her shot in off the underside of the cross-bar to leave young Gosling little chance in Torquay’s goal.

After the game Callington manager Adam McPherson said: ‘We did not start the game well and failed to get going until we scored the first goal, but some credit must go to Torquay for that. They had a better shape and stopped us building up from the back. Thankfully we re-grouped once we scored and begun to move the ball around better. In the end it was comfortable and it was nice to see Kelly Phillips come in for the first time this season and make the impact she did off the bench.
