THE Lambs closed the gap on third placed Godolphin to four points with this dominant performance. The pitch at Langsford Park was in good condition but the playing surface did cut up during the game.
The home team got off to a fast start and created a number of scoring chances in the opening 30 minutes. In the fifth minute Kelvin Fyneboy and Jack Crago combined well, with the latter dragging his shot inches wide of the target from 15 yards.
Three minutes later saw Lewis Coombes find Crago. His defence splitting pass found Fyneboy, whose shot found Shepherd but his effort was blocked by a defender and deflected for a corner kick.
Minutes later another great passing move saw Coombes and Fyneboy exchange passes to open up the visitors’ defence; the ball found Crago, his shot hit the crossbar and deflected to safety.
The visitors had their first scoring chance two minutes later when Mitchell shot over the bar from 15 yards. Crago then had a shot saved by Semmens in the visitors’ goal.
Godolphin were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area but Lowry shot well wide of the target.
For all their domination the Lambs could still not find that cutting edge in front of goal. A free kick from Dave Hallett saw Lewis Daw’s header flash just over the crossbar.
As the interval approached the visitors then started to get a foothold in the game but the home defence were in fine form, which resulted in a goal-less first half.
Manager Stewart Henderson made a single change at half time, bringing on Glynn Hobbs for Ricki Shepherd. Hobbs had an immediate impact as he combined with Fyneboy to open up the visitors’ defence but Fyneboy shot flashed inches wide of the target. Hobbs then hit a thunderous shot from 25 yards which skimmed the top of the crossbar.
The Lambs broke the deadlock in the 61st minute. After a fine move down the left flank with Fyneboy finding Josh Robins, his shot was deflected for a corner kick. Dave Hallett’s kick found Warren Daw who placed his header into the top corner of the net.
Things got worse for the visitors in the 65th minute when they reduced to ten men when Lowry was shown a straight red card for a bad challenge.
The visitors gave it a good go in the last quarter of the game, although they never really gave the home team many concerns. The nearest they came to scoring was an effort from Fallen from 25 yards which clipped the top of the Lambs crossbar.
Hobbs sealed the victory when a fine pass from Lewis Daw saw Hobbs outpace the visitors’ defence, round the keeper and walk the ball into the net.
The home team increased their advantage when Lewis Coombes was brought down in the penalty area. Glyn Hobbs smashed the ball home from the spot kick.
This was another good team performance with everyone playing their part to get the well deserved victory, keeping the team in line for a top four finish.
