Times Sport editor John Hutchins offers his personal opinion on the events, topics and personalities in the world of sport.

IT was great to see James Birds’ pictures in last week’s Times of what has become an important annual fixture in the calendar of West Devon’s sporting life – the splendid Tavy 13.

There were around 500 runners taking part in the 13 mile main race, which started at the Tavistock athletics track, proceeding with a stamina test of a steep climb up on to the moors before taking in the beauty of Whitchurch Down, down to the Meadows before heading back for a lap of the athletics track to the finish.

What I like is that from those pictures all the runners started with a big grin on their face and ended with one as they crossed the line – although I must admit, if I had taken part — even if I had walked the 13 miles — as a self-confessed and veteran couch potato  I don’t think I would have the energy to even raise a smile at the finish! I’d be demanding my Mars Bar and the nearest settee.

The Tavy 13 attracts entrants of all ages and abilities and although for many the competitive element is important, others look to improve their own times or just enjoy taking part.

Alongside the ‘main event’ is the completion of the equally excellent Primary Schools Challenge, organised by OCRA, where local school pupils finish off their target of one mile runs over 13 weeks. This year there were around 500 children taking part – meaning 1,000 people of all ages in the two events. Great stuff.

These two events continue to be a real community effort - superbly and efficiently organised by Tavistock Athletic Club, its team of volunteers and backed by individual and local businesses.

Many of the runners also raise money for many great local and national charities. So a big well done to the organisers, and all those on and off ‘the track’ who supported it. It gave pleasure to so many and good, healthy exercise. Long may it continue.

Now where did I put that television remote control?
