Devon and Exeter two

University thirds 1

Chagford 2

CHAGFORD Football Club secured third place and promotion to division one with a battling performance, against the only team that might have overtaken them.

University took the initiative early on and only dogged defending kept them at bay until the 25th minute. Joe Hooton’s rocket of a shot flying past Scarry before he knew it. The visitors dug deep to fight back and were duly rewarded when Andrew Davis finished coolly, a minute before half-time.

The goal lifted Chagford and they enjoyed a much better second half. Instead of sitting back, their defence and midfield pressed the students a lot higher up the pitch, allowing more creativity all round. Man of the match Jack Phillips leading by example.

Even so, some last ditch defending and a superb one on one save from Scarry kept the scores even. Neither team would settle for the draw and, with just four minutes left, Josh Stanbury was set free to fire home into the far corner. It was the cue for ecstatic celebrations and shattered nerves by a relieved Chagford and their supporters.
