SUPPORTERS who came to the game witnessed the fastest goal ever scored at Langsford Park, with striker Glyn Hobbs scoring in just four seconds.
From the kick off, Coombes rolled the ball to Hobbs, he spotted that the visitors’ goalkeeper Paynter well off his line, his powerful shot from the halfway line sailed over the retreating keeper into the top corner of the net.
The home team created two more opportunities in the opening 15 minutes; Robins’ cross saw Coombes head inches wide of the target. Minutes later a corner kick taken by Hallett found Fyneboy but his shot was cleared to safety.
The Lambs were dominating possession and they almost doubled their lead when a corner kick saw Coombes flash a shot just wide of the target.
In the 22nd minute the Lambs got their second goal of the evening when Hallett found Hobbs; his pass found Dan Evans who fired the ball home from ten yards.
The visitors grew into the game and were awarded a penalty in the 40th minute but Jack Ord in the home goal made a terrific save to deny them from opening their account.
Just before the interval the home team made it 3-0 when a long clearance from Ord saw Hobbs outpace the visitors’ defence and lob the advancing keeper form 16 yards.
The Lambs continued to dominate possession in the second half as Coombes and Fyneboy combined well to set up Hallett but his shot flashed over the crossbar. The home team should have made it four in the 55th minute when Hobbs’ pace got him free of the visitors’ defence. With the goal in his sights he decided to pass to Coombes, but his goal-bound shot was blocked by a defender.
The home team continued to dominate the game so it came as no surprise when they scored their fourth in the 75th minute, when Hallett’s terrific pass split the defence open for Hobbs to run past the defence and fire home from 18 yards to complete his hat-trick. Three minutes later the visitors’ defence was opened up again for Hobbs to slot home to score his fourth of the game.
The visitors had an opportunity to reduce the deficit in the 87th minute when they were awarded a penalty. O’ Hagan’s spot hit the upright and ran out for a goal kick.
The home team completed the scoring in time added on when another fine move saw young Rikki Shepherd ram the ball home from close range following another great passing move.
The Lambs put in a really great team performance, with everyone playing to their true potential. The target now is to maintain this level of play for the remainder of the season to try and secure a top six finish.
Bodmin Town 2
Tavistock AFC 1
THE Lambs lost out in this close encounter though they more than matched Bodmin for long periods in the game.
Only a top rate performance from ex- professional Kevin Miller denied them, along with some questionable decisions by the match officials denied the visitors of at least a share of the points.
Bodmin were fast out of the blocks and opened the scoring in the eighth minute when the ball fell to Nick Hurst after a good move. His delightful volley flashed past Jack Ord into the net.
The Lambs were struggling to get their passing game going on a difficult playing surface. Bodmin continued to press forward and Ord was called on to make two smart saves to deny them extending their lead.
After the first quarter the Lambs started to get a foothold in the game. Their first opportunity came when a great pass from Warren Daw put Glyn Hobbs in on goal. Miller came rushing out of his goal, but for some reason the referee gave a foul against Hobbs as they both contested the ball in what was a 50/50 challenge.
The Lambs were unlucky not to equalise when Glyn Hobbs struck the post with a thunderous drive. The home team immediately broke away and doubled their lead as a shot from Andrew Neal was parried by Ord, but Sam Mathews was on hand to slot home.
In the 38th minute a good move by the visitors saw the pace of Jack Crago in on goal, but his shot was well saved by Miller. Minutes later Ord made a great save to deny Mathews from increasing the home team’s lead.
Just before the interval a free kick by Hallett found Lewis Coombes, but his header was well saved by Miller to keep the score 2-0 at half time.
Lambs manager Stewart Henderson made a tactical change at the interval with Rikki Shepherd replacing Kelvin Fyneboy.
The Lambs really took the game to Bodmin in the second half and within three minutes of the restart a fine move between Robins and Crago saw Crago outpace the full back and lash a great cross into the six yard box, but it was inches out of the reach of the on rushing Shepherd.
In the 56th minute the visitors thought they had reduced the arrears when a free kick from Hallett was headed back across the box by Daw for Crago to sweep the ball home, only to be ruled out for off side.
The Lambs now had the greater share of possession keeping the home defence under pressure. The home side always looked dangerous in the counter attack and Ord was called upon to make a smart save to deny Hurst.
In the 70th minute hosts goalkeeper Miller made a great save to deny Crago, after fine interlink play with Hobbs.
The Lambs got their just reward for all the pressure applied on the Bodmin defence, when they were awarded a penalty when Crago was brought down in the penalty area. Glyn Hobbs made no mistake as he rifled the spot kick into the corner of the net.
Minutes later, Miller produced a brilliant double save when he parried a fierce shot from Daw; the ball fell to Coombes but his shot was pushed away to safety.
Rikki Shepherd then made a fine break down the right but his shot flew inches over the angle of the crossbar.
In the dying minutes the Lambs were denied a penalty when Crago’s pace saw him crudely brought down in the penalty area, but the referee waved play on to the disbelief of the Tavistock players.
In stoppage time Hobbs and Crago combined well but Hobbs’ shot went inches over the bar. The home team held out to take all the points.
This was another fine team effort with some really good individual performances. The Lambs had the greater share of the play, with more attempts on goal than title chasing Bodmin. A terrific display by Kevin Miller in the Bodmin goal and some poor decisions by the match officials denied the team from at least a share of the points, if not all three.
