Lamerton 4

St Eval 4

AFTER last week’s defeat in the cup Lamerton faced a strong St Eval side who are also unbeaten in the league.

The game was fierce and fast with both teams having chances to score but some great goalkeeping  from Josh McDonald kept the visitors at bay.

However, player of the match McDonald had no chance when a mix up in the Lamerton defence saw the visitors take the lead with a tap in.

The home side pushed forward and upped their game; a lovely cross in the box from Sam Turner saw captain Stevie Gibbings leap above two players to header the ball home. Spurred on by this it looked like Lamerton were going to add another with inform strikers Ben Backway and Nathan Panter going close and making the keeper pull off some great saves.

Against the run of play St Eval scored their second but it was a gift as Mark Piper collapsed with an injury taking him to hospital.

The game turned into a cracker, with great vocal support from the sidelines Lamerton upped a gear and soon drew level.  A great ball from defender Phil Credicott put Backway through to coolly score under the rushing out goalkeeper.

The home side soon took the lead after a defence splitting ball from defender Glen Holmes put Backway in for his second to make it 3-2. St Eval were not finished — with tired legs Lamerton could not deal with their aggression and with neat passing the vistors soon equalized, then took the lead from a free kick.

Back came Lamerton, with Gibbings battling relentlessly and they soon equalised when a superb free kick from Turner set up Paul Cowling to fire the ball in the back of the net with a diving header.

In the dying minutes Gibbings thought he had won the game as the ball, claimed Lamerton, was over the line but it was waved away from the referee.

This was a great performance by Lamerton who wish Mark Piper a speedy recovery.
