Helston Athletic 2

Tavistock AFC 2

TAVISTOCK got off to a fast start creating two good scoring opportunities in the opening five minutes. The first came in the third minute when a good passing move saw Liam Prynn find Jack Crago, but he blasted the ball over the bar from six yards.

Two minutes later they spurned another golden opportunity when Sam Davey’s shot from close range was deflected away for a corner kick.

The Lambs deservedly took the lead in the tenth minute, when they were awarded a penalty. Jewell pushed Liam Prynn to the ground in the box and the referee immediately pointed to the spot. Crago flashed the ball home.

The visitors continued to dominate the game and doubled their lead in the 20th minute when another really good move saw Tallan Burns and Sam Davey exchange passes with the later providing the pass that found Prynn who fired the ball low into the corner of the net.

Then in the 25th minute a poor clearance from the visitors’ defence saw the ball fall to Quinn just outside the penalty area and he unleashed a thunderbolt shot that nestled in the top corner of the net, giving Josh Oak in the Lambs’ goal no chance of saving.

The visitors continued to dominate possession creating several chances to regain a two-goal advantage but Davey, Prynn, and Crago saw their efforts well saved by Wyatt in the home goal. Just before the interval Crago set up Prynn, but again his effort flew wide of the target.

The home team were certainly more competitive in the second half as they stepped up the tempo of their game and started to get a foothold. In the 55th minute Oak made a terrific save turning a powerful header from Beattie around the post for a corner kick. On the hour a good move saw a great pass from Dave Hallett put Crago in on goal but he flashed the ball over the bar from eight yards.

Minutes later Prynn had his shot saved by Wyatt, then Davey saw his shot clip the post and run away to safety.

Having missed these opportunities to put the game to bed the home team grew in confidence and started to put some pressure on the Lambs’ defence.

Tavistock manager Stuart Henderson made substitutions, with Luke Brown replacing Tallan Burns and Tyler Elliot for Prynn.

In the 80th minute Helston equalised when a good move resulted in Beattie shooting home from close range. The game was now flowing from end to end with both sides searching for that elusive winner. From a corner kick Lewis Daw saw his header flash inches over the bar. Luke Brown and Warren Daw had efforts well saved by Wyatt, while both Gritton and Wharton saw their efforts go well wide of the target for the home team.

The Lambs will be disappointed with this result as it was a game they should have had won by the interval.

The team seem to have lost their calmness in front of goal, relying on power rather than placement. The team need to get back to their top performance levels in order to maintain their challenge for the title.
