Carlsberg South West Peninsula premier Tavistock AFC 3

Saltash United 1

The Lambs continued their fine run of form with another convincing victory against a capable Saltash team last week.

The home team got off to a fine start and almost opened the scoring in the ninth minute; a good move saw Ben Cross find Josh Robins whose defence-splitting pass found Lyle Johnson, but his shot whistled inches wide of the post.

It was all Tavistock during this period and two minutes later Kelvin Fyneboy and Jack Crago combined well only for Crago’s  goal bound shot to be blocked and cleared for a corner kick.

The first real threat from the visitors came in the 20th minute when they were awarded a free kick 22 yards from goal, but Menhennick’s effort was way off target. Five minutes later. Dave Hallett’s corner kick was headed over the bar by Lewis Daw.

The Lambs got the deserved breakthrough in the 39th minute, when another terrific passing move from defence through midfield saw Johnson cross the ball into the penalty area; Fyneboy deliberately stepped over the ball, to allow the on rushing Jack Crago to rifle it into the corner of the net.

Just before the interval the Lambs doubled their lead when Kelvin Fyneboy thundered home a header from a Dave Hallett corner kick.

In the second half the home team continued to have the upper hand. Daw went close with another fine header for a corner kick. This was followed by efforts from Fyneboy and Robins both going wide of the target. The Lambs did have the ball in the net from another corner kick, but the referee gave a free kick for a foul on the keeper.

The Lambs made it three in the 79th minute, when a penetrating run from Josh Robins saw him find Lewis Coombes who produced the perfect return pass for Robins to slot home from ten yards.

Saltash reduced the arrears three minutes later when they were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area; former Lambs’ player Chris Menhennick thundered home an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net. This stirred the visitors into action and they came on strong in the last minutes of the game but the home defence stood firm, and limited them to one scoring opportunity in time added on, but Jack Ord produced a great save to deny Trott.

This was another fine performance for Tavistock, with everyone playing their part. There were also some outstanding individual performances. They need to reproduce this form on Saturday when third placed Godolphin visit Langsford Park.
