Keynsham Town Development 2
Callington Town 3
WITH the best away record in the whole division, Callington once again did themselves proud on their travels.
The visitors had to cope with the loss of their experienced captain and centre back, Marie Wilson, who is now out with a long-term knee injury. The away side were playing into a strong wind and Keynsham used it to their advantage, although without bringing Sara Rowe into any meaningful action in goal. Callington began to settle and played some superb football out from the back — right back Emily Sweet created numerous attacks from the right-hand side. The first goal came when defender Tyler Matthews picked up the ball inside her own half, skipped by an opposition midfielder, before slotting the ball to Kez Moxom who turned sharply and fired the ball in low with her left foot.
Ten minutes later, they had a second goal which their control of the game merited. Adele Brown played a lovely through-ball to Chloe Williams and the striker drove towards goal, before unleashing an unstoppable effort into the top corner.
Town looked comfortable with their two goal lead but a moment of quality from Keynsham saw them pull one back from a volley by Rhianna Ben-Carew inside the box. Callington went into the break with a fully-deserved lead. However, they unfortunately had to replace the injured Moxom.
The second half saw a more evenly balanced game with both sides carrying a threat on goal. Playing with the wind this time Callington had to adapt. Unfortunately for them on 50 minutes Liberty Simms drilled a fierce shot towards goal from 30 yards and Rowe lost sight of the ball in the bright sunlight and the ball ended in the net.
From kick-off though Callington went straight in search of another goal, and within seconds, they were back in front. Gemma Farley played an impeccable pass into the path of Griffiths, who held off the challenge of a defender before calmly slotting past the on-rushing keeper.
With 15 minutes to go Callington almost wrapped up the win when Griffiths played in Jodie Smith and the winger’s clever finish was cleared off the line by a defender.
Player of the match was awarded to Emily Sweet and Eleri Griffiths, who both put in exceptional displays.
Town manager Adam McPherson said: ‘This was by-far one of our most professional and accomplished performances of the season. The football that we played, right from Sara in goal and throughout the entire team was a pleasure to watch from the side-lines. We have done some hard work on this type of play over many years but especially this season, so to see it put into action so effectively is great for everyone involved.’
