THE footballers of CALLINGTON Comm-unity College enjoyed double success in the Cornwall County Cup finals at St Blazey with both its the Year 8 and Year 10 crowned champions.

The Year 8s played Richard Lander School, Truro, in the final. Callington took a 3-0 lead by half time, but this game was far from over.

Richard Lander quickly reduced the score to 3-1 after the break. Although Richard Lander scored once more Callington finished the game the stronger, with Callington as the victorious 5-2 winners.

Jim Manning, Year 8 coach, said: ‘This was a fantastic result for an outstanding team effort. Team ethic has been the key to our success this season with every single member of the squad playing a vital role at one time or another. I am incredibly proud of all the boys and what we have achieved. ’

The Year 10 team, dominated the first ten minutes against a strong Helston College. Captain James Jack steadied the nerves with a fine diving header to put Callington in the lead.

The team undefeated in Cornwall for three years then showed their class with goalkeeper Kieran Prescott merely a spectator in the Callington goal.

Several flowing passages of play resulted in three further goals from George Harvey, Josh Davies and Corey Freeman ensured a 4-0 victory for Callington.

Coach Lee Hazeldine said: ‘After last year I thought we couldn’t improve on the high constituency of performances through-out the season. Each week they have turned up to train in huge numbers and are a true reflection that hard work pays high rewards. I look forward to watching some of them make a career in football.’
