Carlsberg South West Peninsula league cup
Tavistock AFC 2
Torpoint Athletic 1
TAVISTOCK progressed into the second round of the League Cup after a comfortable win over Torpoint. The final score suggests a closer match, but in reality the home team’s dominance was not reflected in the score line. The Lambs now visit local rivals Callington in the next round.
The Lambs were without some key players; Dave Hallett and Ryan Swain were unavailable, while Alexander, Coombes, and Gallway missed out through injury. They also welcomed Kelvin Fyneboy’s return to the club.
The game got off to a fast start and it was the visitors who threatened first when Broomfield found Young with a fine pass but he shot well over the bar from 22 yards. This stirred the home team into action and in the tenth minute they produced a terrific move, but Liam Parnell’s cross was just out of reach of Kelvin Fyneboy.
The Lambs took the lead in the 16th minute when they were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal, Liam Parnell’s stunning shot found the corner of the net.
The home side were now in complete control of possession, and created a number of scoring opportunities. Kelvin Fyneboy produced a fine run going by three defenders, his cross found Jack Crago, but his shot flashed inches wide of the target. Both Dan Follett and Kelvin Fyneboy were denied by Hardie in the visitors’ goal. Then, totally against the run of play, Torpoint equalised when they produced a perfect counter attack down the right, an inch perfect cross finding Lewis Young, who stabbed the ball home from ten yards, on the half hour.
The home team continued to apply the pressure and it was only some resolute defending by the visitors that prevented the home team from taking the lead. From a corner kick a header from Dan Evans found Sam Chitty, his overhead kick was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Ben Hardie.
Kelvin Fyneboy then made a great run beating three defenders; he cut into the penalty area but his thunderous shot from an acute angle flashed inches wide of crossbar and upright.
Just before the interval Hardie produced a couple of great saves to deny Jack Crago from scoring.
Tavistock upped the tempo in the second half which produced a whole load of chances. The home team though they had regained the lead in the 50th minute when a Warren Daw cross was slotted home by Sam Chitty but it was ruled offside. Hardie then produced a fine save to deny Fyneboy
The Lambs then had a slight scare when a counter attack saw Dan Worth shoot over form 22 yards. This was followed by a fine move between Fyneboy and Crago to set up Dan Follett but his shot hit the post.
The normally lethal Jack Crago spurned a couple of decent opportunities when well placed, and Follett almost scored when his shot went just wide. Just as it looked like it was be one of those days where the team was going to do everything but score, the Lambs were awarded a penalty when Crago was brought down in the penalty area. Josh Robins stepped up to thunder the ball home to give the deserved victory.
