Aquarius Devon Women’s Supplementary Cup Final

Tavistock Community Ladies 4

Buckland Athletic Ladies 3

PLAYED at the Devon FA headquarters at Newton Abbot on paper this looked a bit of a David verses Golith contest as Buckland Ladies, who have an unbeaten season so far went into this game in great confidence.? Straight from the kick off Buckland looked to get the ball forward to test the Tavistock defence and it paid off as after just 90 seconds Buckland took the lead when the ball fell to Sian Chapman inside the penalty box, who confidently shot past the Tavistock keeper Zoe Stock giving Buckland an early lead.

Tavistock restarted the game and played the ball between their midfielders keeping the ball well until Buckland reclaimed possession and went on the attack again. However, the Tavistock defence calmly got the ball back and played it out and put together their first attack and striker Becky Turner got a strike in on goal which was saved by Buckland’s keeper Laura Maguire.?On 15 minutes Tavistock equalised when Donna Hone tapped the ball home after a save by Maguire fell to her feet and reacted quickest. Tavistock were now full of confidence and it showed when Hone got a bit of room on the right and let fly only to see her shot go just wide.?The Buckland midfield started to control possession with Natalie Chapman bossing the middle and on 20 minutes Buckland retook the lead when Gough cut in from the left to curl into the top corner. But Tavistock fought hard and in the t32nd minute a hopeful through ball to Turner saw her use her pace to run into the Buckland area and cleverly chipped the ball over the advancing Maguire’s head. Soon after, in the 36th minute, Turner once again beat the Buckland offside trap to put Tavistock ahead for the first time in the game.?Buckland were now looking a bit shell shocked but did not give in and kept possession well and probed the Tavistock defence winning three consecutive corners. The third of which was whipped across goal only for Stock to glance the ball towards her own goal but thankfully team mate Kate Hine headed it off the line.?Tavistock started the second half against a determined looking Buckland and in the 48th minute they equalised when Gough got her second after she calmly rounded the keeper.?Buckland nearly scored again in the 63rd minute and it took a great block by player of the match Tavistock’s Robyn Hammond to keep her side in the game.?Buckland continued to pile on the pressure and had a chance to take the lead only for Stock to pull off a good save to keep the scores level.?After 70 minutes Tavistock scored number four when Robyn Hammond hammered the ball home from 30 yards after Buckland failed to clear a Tavistock free kick.?Buckland came back and were throwing everything they had at Tavistock in the closing minutes of the match with Hayley Chamberlain shooting just wide and Zoe Stock making another great save.?The determined Tavistock defence held on and were delighted when referee Jayne Wright blew for full time.?Tavistock celebrated as they were crowned the Aquarius Devon Women’s Supplementary Cup winners.
