COTEHELE Quay Gig Club turned out in force at the World Pilot Gig Championships in the Isles of Scilly at the end of last month. They joined some 140 boats taking part in the 2017 event.
The club’s most impressive performance came from the ladies’ A crew in the gig Teylu, who ranked 33rd from 143 entries.
Both the ladies’ and men’s B crews came second in their final heat, narrowly missing out on a podium trophy presentation.
Racing conditions on the Friday for the veterans’ races were described as ‘the best we’ve ever had’, with the almost flat water particularly suited to a river club.
Sea conditions on the Saturday reverted to normal with quite a swell and lots of choppy water.
Despite concern that the wind forecast for the Sunday would be too strong to race, the final heats went ahead as planned with the champions crossing the finish line in glorious sunshine.
Cotehele Quay Gig Club results: Ladies’ crews (from 143 boats) - ladies’ A (Teylu), 33; ladies’ B (Cream of Cornwall), 98; ladies’ C (Zeus), 107. Men’s crews (from 140 boats) - men’s A (Cream of Cornwall), 50; Men’s B (Teylu), 75.
