TAVISTOCK will be disappointed with this result, as they had the greater share of possession over the 90 minutes and created several chances but failed to get that all important goal.
The Lambs had the ball in the net in the eighth minute when Josh Robins made a good run down the left wing, putting a fine cross into the six yard box. Both Danny O’Hagon and home keeper Sam Borthwick went for the high ball; the ball crossed the goal line, but the referee gave a free kick for a foul on the keeper.
Ten minutes later Sam Chitty put Lewis Coombes through but he was denied as Borthwick pulled off a great save to deny the Lambs taking the lead. Jack Ord in the Lambs’ goal was called upon to make a fine save from a long range shot from Garry Williams.
On the half hour the Lambs were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal. Tom Gossling’s kick found Coombes, who laid the ball back to Bobby Hopkinson on the edge of the penalty area, but he dragged his fierce shot wide of the target.
Callington had a fair share of the play but the Lambs’ back four were in good form and reduced them to long range shots on goal. Just before the interval their left winger saw his thunderous shot go well wide of the target.
The Lambs controlled the second half, but they failed to create many clear cut chances, and when they did their finishing was sadly lacking. On a number of occasions they played one pass or touch too many, before shooting for goal; this allowed a resilient home defence to make a tackle or block their shots.
In the 62nd minute the Lambs forced a corner kick. Josh Robins’ kick was partially cleared, the ball fell to Sam Chitty on the edge of the penalty area and his powerful shot clipped the top of the Callington cross bar.
With 12 minutes to go the Lambs were reduced to ten men when Josh Robins was sent off for a second bookable offence. However, they continued to press for that elusive goal, but as hard as they tried they could not get the all important breakthrough.
The Lambs will be disappointed that they did not start the season with a victory. Although well below their best, they still did enough to record a win. The team were well below their best and will need to improve before the next game on Saturday.
