Carlsberg South West Peninsula League one East
Okehampton Argyle 2
Galmpton Utd 3
OKEHAMPTON put in a fine performance against fifth placed Galmpton and certainly deserved a point from this game but as usual when at the bottom of the league, luck seems to desert you.
Argyle looked a much better side with Stuart Entwhistle and Ed Squire back in the line-up, but still missed the injured James Williams in the back four. This was an entertaining match against physical but skillful opponents and Okehampton came out of the game with some credit.
Both teams made chances early on as the play switched from end to end, but it was Argyle who took the lead on 19 minutes when a corner from the left was headed down by Dale Chadwick for Steve Kinsey to sweep home.
Galmpton levelled on 27 minutes with a huge slice of good fortune. A corner from the right was well worked into the box but Lloyd Clark’s shot took a massive deflection of an Argyle defender to completely wrong-foot Harry Geering and find its way into the net.
With half-time looming, Galmpton were awarded a direct free-kick for handball on the edge of the box and Matt Barkwell’s shot was deflected into the Argyle net off Okehampton’s defensive wall, when Geering had the original shot covered.
Argyle pushed forward in search of an equaliser after the break but were caught out on 62 minutes by a quick break down the right. Geering was able to parry the first Galmpton effort but the ball broke loose to Curtis Clark who increased the visitors’ lead.
Argyle brought on their three substitutes Ross Voaden, Chris Hollands and Adam Mortimer and pushed forward leaving only three at the back in an effort to save the game and on 75 minutes.
Voaden was brought down in the area and Toby Gostling dispatched the resulting penalty to bring Argyle back into the game.
Argyle went flat out in the remaining 15 minutes to try to save the game but the nearest they came was in the last minute when Toby Gostling’s free kick struck the top of the crossbar.
This was an encouraging effort for Argyle although a worry is a last minute injury to their most penetrating forward Ross Voaden which may see him missing the remaining four games. All the team deserve credit for their hard work but particularly Alex Wren, Stuart Entwhistle, Roger Bonaparte and Toby Gostling who put in excellent performances.
