Carlsberg South West Peninsula League one East
Okehampton Argyle 1
St Martins 6
THIS was always going to be a tough game for Okehampton against league leaders St Martins.
Argyle though competed hard throughout and could have scored more goals themselves had not the visiting keeper Lee Bailey made a string of fine one on one saves.
However, St Martins’ pace and superior fitness caused Okehampton problems throughout and it was clear early on who the winners were going to be.
Argyle were missing four regular squad members but welcomed back Tallan Burns on a transfer from Holsworthy.
St Martins took the lead on 10 minutes when a tremendous move saw the ball squared back from the left for prolific scorer Ace High to crash home, giving Harry Geering no chance in the Oke goal.
On 27 minutes, the visitors doubled their lead when a fast break from defence saw Dean Billingsley turn home a cross from High.
Argyle were still competitive at this stage and Tallan Burns went close but there was no further scoring before the interval.
Argyle started off strongly in the second half and Jason Cordice was foiled by Bailey but St Martins showed how dangerous they are in attack with a goal from Lee Parker on 61 minutes and another nine minutes later from High.
Okehampton still came back and on 78 minutes, Burns’ corner was headed back across goal by Stuart Entwhistle and Jason Cordice fired home to reduce the arrears.
This led to an Argyle revival and twice Cordice was denied by fine goalkeeping and goal-line clearances, but then they sealed their own fate when a sloppy pass in midfield presented the ball to the visitors allowing Kevin Pike to race away and fire home, killing the game at 5-1.
Two minutes later, the impressive Ace High completed his hat-trick with a fine curling shot from the edge of the box which went in off the post.
