TAVISTOCK College PE faculty hosted its inaugural 'Sports Personality of the Year' awards in an evening to celebrate the effort and achievements of its students in 2012.

The event proved a great success with more than 200 people in attendance including students, staff and parents.

There were various categories including effort and achievement in curriculum time; contribution to the college through sport; achievement in examination and leader-ship qualifications and outstanding practical performers for students who have excelled in the sporting arena.

The winner of the sports personality of the year was Flo Rogers who beat off hot competition from seven other worthy nominees — Darcey Hepworth; Luke Northmore; Flo Rodgers; Saskia Sills; Rebecca Banks; Imogen Sills; Aaron Northmore and Keir Murphy.

Head of Year 11 Hazel Blackmore said: 'Flo is an extremely talented sports woman who has seen successes in many different sports.

'She is always willing to give things a go and frustratingly she is always successful!

Second, and also winner of the 'special achievement award,' was windsurfer Saskia Sills, whose successes in windsurfing has seen her nominated for both the Rolex World Sailor of the year and the BBC young sports personailty of the year in 2012. In third was Aaron Northmore, who has county honours in football and has worked orks tirelessly to develop PE at the college and to help his fellow students.

Deputy head of the PE faculty Shaun Hulbert, told the Times: The evening highlighted the immense sporting talent we have at Tavistock College and we wait in anticipation for the Sports Personality of the Year Awards evening 2013.
