LAST Saturday saw the return of the Horrabridge 5-a-side football tournament after its cancellation last year due to torrential rain.
SOS Quickcash emerged victorious to win the champion's cup and perpetual shield, in a tournament which included a 45 goal ¼ final penalty shoot out!
This was the 16th year of the tournament and saw the retirement from playing of Scott Dent who has attended and played in every tournament from the beginning with his local team Grub Up. Although not playing next year, Scott will still be entering the team and organiser Chris Mitchelmore thanked Scott for his loyalty.
The tournament kicked off with the sun shining, blue skies, and the temperature rising throughout the day with the teams competing for trophies sponsored by Colebrook Chippie. Tavistock Hire Centre, London Inn and Bidders Butchers.
Group matches were not over-blessed with goals and only two teams managed the 'extra point' for scoring three or more in a match.
However there were many keenly contested matches and a lot of local derbies before Lakeside, Kings Tamerton (Group A), Millbridge II, Lakeside U18s (Group B), SOS Quickcash kings Tamerton II (Group C) and 5 Stars, Horrabridge (Group D) progressed to the cup knockout stages.
Most of the local teams finished third or fourth and progressed to the supplementary cup — Crapstone, Naughty Elm (Group A), Ossie's Dream Team, Young Guns (Both Horrabridge group B) , Lakeside, Horr Yennadon Storm (Group C) and Millbridge I, Walkhampton (Group D).
Crapstone beat Walkhampton on penalties and Yennadon beat Ossies Dream Team in keenly and close fought quarter finals before Yennadon triumphed in the semis .
Young Guns excelled as they beat Lakeside U18 II and Naughty Elm lost to Millbridge I in the other quarter finals before Millbridge edged into the final with a solitary goal.
After a goalless final Millbridge I emerged victorious after a penalty shoot out to take the supplementary cup.
Highlight of the champion's cup quarter finals was an incredible 23-22 penalty shoot out victory for Horrabridge over Lakeside.
Kings Tamerton II, SOS Quickcash, and 5 Stars joined them in the semi finals.
Kings Tameron defeated the home team on penalties 3-2 after a 1-1 draw and Quickcash progressed to the final with a similar penalty shoot out score after a 0-0 draw.
Kings Tamerton seemed to suffer from the heat in the final and couldn't regain the form that got them there, with SOS Quickcash still in sparkling form, taking the champions cup.
The organisers wish to say a big 'thank you' to the referees for once again providing a seamless and organised display and all the football and twinning club members who helped.
