THE Royal Life Saving Society is determined to reduce loss of life though drowning. Accidental drowning causes more than 400 UK deaths every year, is the third highest cause of death in children and claims the lives of at least 360,000 people worldwide each year. Most of the deaths are caused by ignorance of the dangers and lack of basic survival skills. If you are aged 8 to 14 and would like to know more about how to Survive and Save, take some advice from Otters Swimming and Life Saving Club tomorrow (Friday, June 27) from 6pm until 7pm at Okehampton Swimming Pool. Experienced instructors will explain how to look after yourself in the pool, on the beach and in open water. Rookie lifeguards and your instructors will tell you how you can learn to help others among friends and with fun. They will also tell you how you can develop lifesaving skills including first aid that will support GCSE, Duke of Edinburgh's Award, good citizenship, and the safety of yourself and your family. To take part, you must be able to swim two lengths (50m) confidently without stopping. There is no charge but a donation to cover the cost of the swimming session will be appreciated.
