JUNIOR and senior members of Tavistock Athletic Club left their trainers at home and met up for their annual awards presentation evening last Friday.
Tavistock Rugby Football Club was filled to near capacity as members celebrated the year's achievements in sportshall, track and field and cross country.
The first awards presented were for winners in the club's Grand Prix series — a most successful competition revised and scored by Paul Marshall.
The series comprised 12 road races throughout the year, starting in January and finishing earlier this month with Bideford 10-miler. No athlete entered all 12 races, but Christine Le Flem and John Windemer both completed 11. John finished the series in seventh place while Christine was presented with the first female trophy with Caron De Val in second place. First male was Pete Bazley with Paul Marshall finishing second and Trevor Williams in third.
'Best newcomers' were Charlie Shipton and Emma Rider in the juniors and Jason Shipton and Sue Rowe, seniors.
'Most promising' juniors were George Hillson and Jade Kinsey.
The award for 'most effort' went to juniors Jenny Milburn and James Best, and to seniors Alison Endean and Gary Chater.
'Most improved' juniors were Josh Blake and Olivia Kinnear while the senior awards were presented to Ann-Marie Chater and Adrian Pitcher.
The awards for achievement went to Amy Bennalick and Patrick Channings (juniors) and Jo Meek and Trevor Williams (seniors).
Outstanding girl for Sportshall was Jenny Milburn and the award for the most outstanding boy went to Luke Edwards.
Also for the juniors, the coaches' special recognition award went to Jodie Stacy, whilst Carrie Lawson and Robin Musgrave who coach Farah group, presented their award to Sam Lane De Courtin and James Best.
Alice Rogers gained the female cross country award, and Tony Symons the male. For the juniors, Shian Temple was best girl and Sam Lane De Courtin best boy. Sam was also awarded the junior male track and field award and Jade Kinsey the female, whilst the senior awards went to Adam Tofield and Sheila Houghton.
Sally Lipscombe was the well-deserving 'club member of the year'. The same went for Carrie Lawson, who was presented with the 'coach of the year' award.
The junior 'outstanding athletes of the year' were Sian Temple and Sam Lane De Courtin, and the senior trophy winners were Allan Herdman and Christine Le Flem.
The presented awards represent the year's achievement for some club members, and yet not all enter races or competitions.
Many senior members run to maintain their fitness or to meet up with friends for a sociable run. They meet at 6.30pm on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Tavistock College Sports Centre and runners of all speeds are most welcome. Call 01822 612577 for more information.
