WHAT a way to kick off the new season of boxing — Des Newton and fellow gym mate Malachi Holden were both entered in the national championships on Saturday. Bere Alston boxer Newton was entered in the 60 to 64kg category which meant he had to lose 4kg to make the weight. With extensive and hard training Des tipped the scales at an impressive 63.4kg just inside the limit. Holden weighed in at a fine 73.5kg. The competition was held at Barnstaple Rugby Club and up first was Newton from Plympton ABC and his opponent a durable Danny Cunningham of arena Bournemouth. The bell sounded for the first round and straight out of the blocks was Newton taking centre of the ring and on the front foot. Instantly Newton was using his fast hand speed to good effect and catching Cunningham with fast, hard shots. It was clear to see Newton's intent, the second round sounded and straight from the off Newton was winging in hurtful shots, having backed Cunningham up to the ropes; Newton let his hands go and caught him with a flush straight right and sent Cunningham to the canvas. Brave as he was, he rose from the floor to a standing eight count and Newton saw the finish was in sight and jumped straight on Cunningham and finished him off leaving him on the canvas and the referee calling an end to the bout. The win for Newton meant he became southern area champion and moves on to the next stage to becoming a national champion, boxing at the West Counties final on October 4.
