Whitchurch Wayfarer’s chairman’s XI v

Whitchurch club XI

A WHITCHURCH selected XI took on the chairman’s selected XI at Whitchurch on Sunday to wrap up the season.

The chairman won the toss and decided to bat.  Elliot and Gray opened the batting for the chairman’s side but their partnership was just one as Charlie Barriball bowled Gray off his pads second ball of the game.

Witcher came in at three and looked to start a counter charge with Elliot. Bone then picked up the wicket of Elliot caught at mid off for 23 and Credicott was then out bowled for 8.

When Witcher was bowled by skipper Billy Barriball for 31 the chairman’s side looked in trouble but Jacobs and Towl but on 82 runs in their partnership with Jacobs making 56 whilst Towl finished unbeaten on 27 to post 171 off their 35 overs.

The club’s run chase got off to a good start with openers Billy Barriball and Steve Hodge.

Hodge was first to go with a leading edge off Northey, spooning to first slip. Billy then fell soon after bowled by Dean Elliot for 29; when Elliot then trapped his brother Charlie lbw the club were in a spot of bother.

Bob Powell came to the crease and batted superbly but wickets continued to fall at the other end with Wallace and Alford both going for 3. Next Powell was caught at mid off from the bowling of Ben Hodge for a superb 49 giving the club a chance but it was going to be a close finish with 60 needed from 10 overs.

It was an excellent finish both to the game and the season; Bone (46) hit three imperious sixes and Kerswell (19) four cultured fours as the pair put on an unbroken stand to take the game with two overs to spare just as the rain started to fall.

That wrapped up a good year for Whitchurch and they will be looking to come back stronger next year with two young sides that can only improve.
