Whitchurch seconds v

Devon seconds

WHITCHURCH seconds faced a depleted South Devon seconds on a very hot afternoon. South Devon elected to bat first and may have regretted that decision when Mackenzie-Smith took two wickets before any runs came from the bat.

Two down quickly became three as Nathan Prout took a fine catch behind the stumps; just one part of his fine work behind the stumps in difficult conditions. From 26 for 3 Maunder (30) and Lear (39) brought some stability to the team and took the score into the 70s. That was as good as it got for the visitors.

Meadows  (4-34) took the mainstays and South Devon collapsed. Amery (30) not out resisted towards the end but could not find anyone to stay with him. The total of 140 was one that Whitchurch felt confident of achieving.

In reply, Kerswill made a rare appearance as opener. Although he lost his opening partner early on he and Tyler Hunt (20) put on 45 and settled the nerves. A further partnership of 73 with Marais (32) made the result more sure.

Having just passed his 50 Kerswill missed a straight one from Lear (3-39) and a middle order wobble seemed possible.

Ord and Meadows finished the job without any further mishaps and Whitchurch took all 20 points keeping them safely out of the relegation zone.
