Plympton thirds v Yelverton seconds

YELVERTON seconds travelled to Plymouth College school for a game against previously unbeaten Plympton thirds.

On a sunny and warm afternoon Yelverton captain Chris Vinson won the toss and decided to field. Plympton opened up with Hamilton and O’Higgins and Yelverton began the bowling with Ian Dawe and Dim Rushton.

First to go was Hamilton to a sharp caught and bowled from Rushton for 7 [21-1]. This brought Agnew to the wicket, Rushton finished his spell with (7-0-21-1) and was replaced in the attack by Christiaan Van Niekerk, who struck with the fifth ball of his first over when he bowled Agnew for 5 [46-2], Then, in his last over, Dawe, with the help of a catch from Giles Beauchamp, removed opener O’Higgins who was looking quite comfortable for 22 [46-3] .

Van Niekerk in his next three overs took a further four Plympton wickets with two double wicket maidens and was twice on a hat-trick.

Van Niekerk finished with (4-3-4-5) and was replaced by fellow spinner Will Chapman.

At the other end Colmer bowled two overs before being injured and he was replaced by Jake Earl (3-0-11-0).

However, all the remaining damage was done by Chapman who removed the final three wickets giving him (2.5-0-8-3). The Yelverton bowling ’twins’ claiming  8-12 as Plympton were dismissed for just 77.

After the tea break, Yelverton set about chasing down the target of 78 to win for 20 points. Opening the batting were Chris Cottrell and Luke Julyan and they batted patiently for 12 overs before Caunter trapped Julyan lbw with his score on 10. Cottrell was then joined by Beauchamp in the middle and patiently they brought the total closer to the   winning line. However, just before the end Cottrell was also trapped lbw by Sandhu for an excellent 41 on 77-2 in the 20th over, with the scores tied and 25 overs to score one run.

First ball of the 21st over saw Jason Degg bowl a wide and victory was Yelverton’s who moved up to fourth in the table.
