Okehampton ladies’ firsts 3

Bodmin ladies 1

OKEHAMPTON faced bottom of the league Bodmin in the last match of the season.

The Columbines started strong with Hannah Whiteley and Jess Medland passing well to move the ball forward. Bodmin put up a good defence and disrupted the home attack. A series of passes from Anna Speak and Emily Rowland fed the ball to Jo Moppett, who beat several Bodmin players to score Okehampton’s first goal of the match.

The Okehampton ladies continued to push forward with Molly Marvin and Jess Medland working tirelessly in the centre of the pitch to create chances in the D. Following an Oke hit out, the ball was worked up the pitch with Lesley Bingham linking well with Moppet to create an excellent chance, which Moppet did not miss, making the score 2-0 at the half time break.

Bodmin came out after the break putting pressure on the Okehampton defence but Laura Parsons, Nicky Pedrick, Amanda Sim and Abi Colton did well to stop the ball crossing the line; after a series of short corners Bodmin were awarded a penalty flick which, despite keeper Alice Wiseman’s best efforts, they scored.

Oke were determined to finish the season on a high and Sophie Whiteley put several balls forward in the path of Sophia Marshal and Anna Speak but the strong Bodmin keeper kept the score line down.

During one of these attacks the ball hit a foot on the Bodmin goal line and Okehampton were awarded a penalty flick. Jo Moppet stepped up was unfortunate that a good save from the keeper kept the ball out.

In the dying seconds of the game captain Kim Davey intercepted the ball well and ran for the base line leaving a trail of blue smoke behind her before making a proficient cross to Jo Moppett on the penalty spot who expertly slotted the ball into the goal. The match ended with the final score 3-1 to Okehampton ladies.

Okehampton finish their first season in the South division in eighth position, which ensures they will stay in this league next year.

All the club congratulate Kim Davey, who steps down as ladies’ first team captain after three excellent years in charge.
