CONSERVATIVE Z were hosts to West Devon A in this tight and at times, nervy Tavistock Snooker League game.

The normally reliable Jankowski for Con Z initially put Morris to the sword, but a few lapses in concentration on his part allowed Morris back into the frame resulting in a black ball game in the latter’s favour.

Likewise Chris Mayors for Con Z team had Kevin Rich on the ropes in the first half of the match, but Rich after a stuttering start, regained his composure and went on to take the frame.

The old adversaries Trev  Symons and Tim Taylor slogged it out relentlessly, with Symons the eventual victor in an intense frame.

Another tightly contested game saw McKechnie of Con Z team and West Devon’s skipper Heathman, two seasoned players, ask or give no quarter, with Heathman overhauling McKechnie to finally take the game.

Last to the table was the redoubtable Fitzsimmons for Con Z team facing Andy Lawrence. Fitzsimmons got off to a storming start and never relinquished his overwhelming lead despite Lawrence’s best efforts.

Overall, a match that was closer than expected by all concerned.

Golf A, despite some good individual showings were still not able to pick up their first win of the season as they lost once again by the odd frame, this time to Conservative B.

Wylie gave a good account of himself but it was Dolan for the Con B who took the honours. They went two up as skipper Evans fought off a strong challenge from Golf’s Finnigan.

Golf’s Ruth put in a good shift to take out Monk and reduce the deficit to one frame, backed up by a solid start from Golf’s Whitley, who drew the match level in convincing style.

The decider was a somewhat damp squib from Golf’s perspective as Con’s ‘top gun’ Dent made no mistake in a one sided encounter with Treble. Just falling short again, Golf will find solace from the fact that these two points took them above Con C and off the foot of the table again.

Conservative A made it back to back 4-1 wins at the West Devon Club, this time against West Devon C as they moved to top spot in the table.

The score line flattered to deceive though as West Devon C could easily have taken two more frames in this match.

Lacey for Con A overwhelmed Smith at a whirlwind pace and it was 2-0 as Evans dug deep and struggled to stay with a resurgent Shrimpton (senior) — relying on a late 18 clearance to steal the frame from the latter who was all but home and dry.

Grigg pulled one back for West Devon C as he potted more of the loose balls on offer than Bell in a scrappy affair.

The match was secured for Con A as Carruthers disposed of Williams at a canter — a 32 break for Carruthers in the process was pleasing to the eye.

Another late close game was eventually secured by Con’s Babb. A 15 minute safety rally on the pink ball gave some indication of Hodge’s willingness to stay in this frame to the bitter end, in a frame which was a shame someone had to lose.
