Devon seconds E West Whitchurch seconds  v Yelverton thirds WHITCHURCH seconds continue to search for their first win of the season, but this was a closely fought affair. Once again, Whitchurch had to bat first. Runs were hard to come by as the players adapted to a variable pitch. Wallace (22) and Tamblin saw off the openers, before Wallace top edged a spinning delivery of the excellent Ben Spear (3-23). Tamblin and Hodge added 46 for the third wicket as Whitchurch adapted well and started to advance the score. Hodge then departed for 23. Luffman then took up the attack with a quickfire 30, but when he and Tamblin had gone for 25, Whitchurch suffered their mini collapse — 116-3 became 120-6. The lower order were able to complete the overs achieving the extra bonus point for 150 off the last ball of the innings. The new ball pair of Northey and Hall started brightly, with runs still at a premium. Northey struck first to dismiss Spear for 13 with the assistance of a stunning, diving catch from Dunne. Julyan and Smith dug in and took Yelverton past 50. Poole (2-32) then removed Smith for 20 and the brakes were applied. On a pitch offering a lot to the spinners, Tamblin and Hodge made chances and run scoring difficult. Collectively their 18 overs went for 45 putting Whitchurch right in the game. When Yelverton skipper Farnham was dismissed for a patient 46, the game was for either side to win. A few lusty blows from Spear ensured Yelverton achieved their target but with only four wickets in hand and three overs to spare.
