IN more than 32 years many thousands of pounds have been raised for charity by members of Tavistock Golf Club.

Since 2000 alone more than £90,000 has been donated to charities that have been chosen by the club captains.

The Devon Air Ambulance Trust and the Tavistock Support Triangle Centre for the Chemo Outreach Project are the charities selected by this year's club captain Richard Burrows.

At the club's presentation evening Richard announced that the sum of £12,400 had been raised.

He said: 'I would like to thank all those who have helped and supported me in raising this magnificent sum including the ladies and lady veterans sections but I must give my special thanks to Archie Gawman and Turners of Roborough, for without their very generous donation, the sum would not as be as high as it would have been.'

Lesley Gibson, who accepted the cheque on behalf of the Tavistock Triangle Centre, said that she was delighted and overwhelmed to receive the cheque for £6,200.

She said: 'This is most we have received in the 18 months since the Tavistock Triangle Centre opened so I thank the captain for selecting our charity and to all the members for their generous support.

The Chemo Outreach project helps and supports those affected by cancer so this money will be well spent.'

Mike Date, of the Devon Air Ambulance Trust, told members that it takes more than £4 million pounds a year to keep the service running.

He said: 'The trust was the idea of a lady whose son was killed in 1986.  It was started up in 1992 and has been responsible for the saving of many lives.  On behalf of the trust I would like to thank you all for this very generous donation.'
