Whitchurch Chairman's XI v

Whitchurch Club XI

FIRST competed for in 1994, a fifth chairman's tie was sacrificed as Gavin Hall's first chairman's side took on the Whitchurch club side, led by son Richard.

The club side batted first and were soon in dire straights - after 10 balls they were 0 for 3. Hodge, Credicott and Tamblin all back in the paviliion. Billy Barriball and Josh Meadows started the rescue act, but at 28-5, it still looked like being a short afternoon. The chairman had figures of 3 for 10 at this point.

Meadows was his usual domineering best. He smashed five 6s and seven 4s in an innings of 64 from only 45 balls.

At drinks Whitchurch were 87-7 and causing the tea lady some panic. However, a partnership with promising youngster Rob Bone and club coach Bob Powell led the club side to a position of strength.

Bone was out for 48, just short of a well deserved half century. The partnership having been worth 90. Skipper Hall junior and Powell (47no) then closed the innings with the club side posting 211-8 for a great recovery.

Jonny Elliott and Mark Shorrock made a steady reply for the chairman's side, but found run scoring less fluent than the club side against tight bowling from Josh Towl and Hammy Kerswill.

Elliott was bowled by Billy Barriball for 19. Adrian Towl then threatened to lead the run chase before being bowled for 27.

As the rate required increased, Tamblin capitalised with 4-36 from a variety of good balls and luck.

Jacobs reminded Whitchurch of his batting abilities with 32, but when he went, so did the chairman's hopes of victory.

Late resilience was shown by the chairman himself with 21, but Credicott mopped up the tail with 2-6.

Whitchurch club side winning back the chairman's tie by 52 runs.
