OVER the past two weekends, Tavistock Athletics Club juniors have enjoyed considerable success at the County Championships.
Last Saturday saw the Cornwall County Championships held at Carn Brea and, on the track, Tayla James took the U17 girls’ 200m title after winning a silver in the 100 metres while her team-mate Tilly McDowell won gold in the U17 1,500m steeplechase. Lee Shipton achieved a PB securing his title in the U17 boys’ shot.
Older brother Charlie Shipton won a silver in the U20 men’s hammer while Ella Tomlin achieved a PB in winning the U20 women’s discus and silver in the shot.
Ella’s younger brother Harry Tomlin claimed his gold with an impressive performance in the U15 pentathlon where he achieved PBs in the 800m, hurdles, high jump and long jump.
On Sunday the action switched to Exeter Arena where their Devon team-mates Ben Pitts set a championship record in winning the U15 long jump title and also set PBs in taking silver in both the 100m and 200m. U13 Nicolas Maczugowski also set a new championship record in securing gold in the shot and followed this up with PBs winning silver in the high jump and bronze in the hurdles.
In the 3,000m Jennifer Sabine won gold in the senior women and U20 Tom Brew won silver while in the 1,500m U17 Natasha Farrington and U15 Amelia Riggott won gold, U20 Emma Ryder won silver and U15 Krystyna Cade won bronze. There was more success in the 800m with Emma Ryder winning the U20 title and Jenny Milburn getting bronze in the U17 event.
There were titles for U20 women Jade Kinsey in the 400m and Joely Bytheway in the both the 100m and 400m hurdles. Jamie Bulbring won two silver medals in the U15 girl’s 100m and set a new PB in the 200m.
In the field events Emily Lumley achieved a PB in winning gold in the U17 discus and followed this up with a silver in the shot. Lois Fileman won silver medals in both the U20 hammer and discus. Her brother Edward Fileman and Hannah Gellatly both took a silver in the U17 hammer. U20 Ben Rogers won gold in the triple jump and set a PB winning the hammer. He also won silver in the discus, shot and long jump.
This Sunday (May 27)Exeter Arena hosted the Devon Schools and County Combined Events Championships. Emily Lumley followed up her county successes with a pair of silver medals in the U17 pentathlon. Team-mate Nicolas Maczugowski set five PBs on his way to also winning a pair of silver medals in the U13 event.
