THIS year’s Bere Pen 10k enjoyed a record turnout in warm and humid conditions on Saturday evening.

The popular event is a scenic ‘three down, three up’ road run around the beautiful Bere Peninsula, an area of outstanding natural beauty which passes along the banks of the beautiful River Tamar.

The route starts in the village and winds its way down to Weir Quay. The first half of the run is a fast downhill making it easy for the runners to cover the ground in good time; however, once they reach the flat it is then a hard slog up some very steep hills before re-entering the village for a fast downhill to the finish, and has a well deserved reputation of being a tough race.

The first male home was Ben Morrish of Team H in a time of 37 minutes 47 seconds; he was followed by Plymouth Harrier David Beckenkrager in 38.06 and Ben Austin in 38.22.

The first female was BAT’s own Sam Lake in 43.24, followed by Heather Fell of Tavistock Athletic Club in 44.33 and third Emma Lake of Erme Valley Harriers in 44.59.

The BATs put up a large team of entrants, as well as providing support for

runners out on the course, timekeeping, baking and helping with all the jobs an event of this type requires and this year 232 competitors took part which is the biggest field to date.

The fancy dress category encouraged a large number of runners to don colourful and entertaining costumes, much to the delight of supporters, spectators and the residents of the Bere Peninsula and lent a festival feel to the race.

First over the line for the BATs was Paul Ashton in 52.56 and the first lady BAT was Heather French in 1.02.06 .

Other BATs completing the race were Jon Rowsell 1.01.35, Ralph Elmes 1.02.35, Julie Page 1.02.45, Lisa Birch 1.02.46, Sally Dunn 1.02.47, Debbie Ashton 1.03.02, Fran Morgan 1.04.36, Quintin Harte-Latremouille 1.06.10, Melissa Pinfield 1.06.10, Natasha Hingston 1.06.49, Mel Greaves 1.07.11, Alison Greaves 1.07.17, Shaun Hingston 1.09.07, Hilary Head 1.09.32, Andy Cowden 1.10.07, Cally Barnes 1.10.09, Dominika Nawalany 1.12.37, Sarah Bartlett 1.14.34, Richard Cripps 1.19.44, Louise Helcoop 1.19.49, Sam Harte-Latremouille 1.21.41, Fiona Maddock (sweep runner) 1.37.54.
