LAST weekend six members of Bere Alston Trekkers (Bats) packed up their maps, hydration packs and courage and headed to Somerset to take part in the Blackdown Beauty. The Blackdown Beauty is a social run in the Blackdown Hills on the Devon and Somerset borders. It is not a race but a chance to run, jog and walk in good company enjoying the outstanding scenery on this beautiful, sometimes demanding course following public footpaths and minor roads. The Beauty is a self-navigating event, which goes through knee deep bogs, fields of 6' high stinging nettles, streams, harsh climbs and steep descents. BATs Dotty King, Emma James, Sally Dunn and Philip King finished in 4 hours 51 minutes 52 seconds and to Donna Luckham and Mel Greaves who finished in 5.43.09. Also running last weekend were nine Bats in the latest of the club's Grand Prix events, the Duckponds 7k. This race starts at Oreston Primary School in Plymstock and is a two lap course taking in grass, footpath, woodlands and a short distance of private road, all in and around Radford Park and surrounding areas. First lady Bat home and third lady overall was Sam Lake, first male Bat home was Steve Hill. Earlier in the month Paul and Rebecca Mingo took part in the Lakeland Trails Marathon. Starting and finishing at Coniston Hall it is described as 'the most scenic trail Marathon in Britain.' Paul and Rebecca Mingo each year like to run a marathon and follow it with a climb, with this year's climb being the Scafell Pike which is the highest mountain in England, at an elevation of 978 meters (3,209ft) above sea level. Finishing second lady overall Rebecca ran a great time of 3.46.43 and Paul Mingo finished 5.22.36. BATs will next be flying at the Tavy Town Relays and the Haytor Heller.
