Okehampton Argyle 4

Sidmouth Town 1

ON a sunny afternoon at Simmons Park, Okehampton Argyle got their season off to a fine start with a convincing win over visiting Sidmouth.

Argyle were missing three regular first team players but the young players who came in showed that they have the ability to perform at this level.

The first half was a little scrappy as both sides took time to settle and Sidmouth looked the more threatening in the first ten minutes. However, Argyle gradually began to take control and took the lead on 13 minutes, when Steve Kinsey received the ball on the edge of the box and fired home a blistering low drive into the corner of the net.

The game continued fairly evenly until half-time and although Argyle created the better chances they were unable to increase their lead.

Okehampton stepped up their game in the second half and began to take control. They doubled their lead on 56 minutes when captain Dale Chadwick beautifully volleyed home Brad Ausden's corner after a period of sustained pressure.

Following this, four clear chances to increase the lead went begging due to poor finishing despite excellent approach work. Argyle were punished when Sam Baker pulled one back for Sidmouth on 72 minutes. However, any hopes the visitors had of a comeback were dashed when Matt Mortimer headed home Ausden's corner five minutes later.

Argyle brought on substitutes James Williams, Kyler Burns and Dave Smith to provide fresh legs and continued to push forward and the best goal of the game was added in injury time.

Steve Kinsey showed tremendous control to play a perfect pass to Luke Alden wide on the left and the mid-fielder beat his marker superbly before squaring the ball for Brad Ausden to rifle home from close in.

This was a good overall performance Argyle. Debutant goalkeeper Jordan Lee had a good solid match and made two fine saves and Corey Burns, Dale Chadwick and Matt Mortimer were in great form at the back. The Argyle midfield all looked strong and worked hard and Steve Kinsey put in a great performance up front.
