Alphington 2
Okehampton Argyle 1
ARGYLE put in a lacklustre performance at the Chronicles as Alphington won their first game of the season.
It was an entertaining game and evenly matched but Okehampton never reached the heights of their display at Crediton the previous week. Argyle now have only one win from their first six games, frustratingly having lost four of these matches by the odd goal.
Argyle's defence looked shaky in the first half with players being drawn out of position and, in midfield, too many passes were going to the opposition.
After eight minutes the Alphas took the lead when Ryan Leverton delivered a clever pass to Sean Adderley for him to turn and fire past Craig Mulholland.
Oke tried to get back into the game and Brad Ausden forced a fine save from the home keeper on the half-hour mark, but at the break the score was still 1-0.
Argyle were a better side in the second half and begun to pressurise the Alphington defence and it was no surprise when they levelled on the hour mark.
Luke Alden carried the ball past several defenders across the face of the Alphington box and delivered to Brad Ausden on the left edge of the goal area. Ausden's fierce shot had too much pace for the home keeper and squeezed out of his hands and into the net.
Argyle brought on their three substitutes and went for the win. Ollie Crimmins was always dangerous wide on the right and delivered some dangerous crosses. From one of these, Steve Kinsey headed home only to have the goal wiped off for a nudge on the goalkeeper, and from another Ed Squire was thwarted on the line as he tried to force the ball home. However, with only ten minutes remaining, Argyle created their own downfall as they played across the centre of their own defence and Dale Chadwick's poor clearance was picked up by Ryan Leverton who raced clear of the Argyle defence and curled the ball expertly round Mulholland to give the hosts all three points.
This game may well have been Luke Alden's last appearance for the club as he has attracted interest from Western League Premier Division side Willand Rovers. He has been an outstanding player for Argyle over the past three seasons and if he does decide to go, the club would like to wish him well in this higher standard of football.
