Carlsberg South West Peninsula League division one East
Exeter University 4
Okehampton Argyle 0
THIS was a disappointing result for Argyle as the University outclassed and outpaced them to earn their first victory of the season.
The student team is only just beginning to take shape with its full intake of students and this team will certainly surprise some higher placed teams than Okehampton as the season progresses.
Argyle looked vulnerable at set piece plays throughout and fell behind on five minutes when a left wing corner was not cut out and Tom Male slotted home.
Things got worse five minutes later when the visiting defence again looked vulnerable and allowed Scott Hobbs to blast home from the edge of the area.
The game was effectively over on 25 minutes when Argyle failed to defend a right wing corner and Jessie Wilson scored with a tremendous volley.
Okehampton tried to come back into the game but really only produced one good shot on goal when Ed Squire's low ground shot from 20 yards was pushed round the post by the home keeper for a fine save.
Okehampton brought Matt Mortimer on as a front runner in the second half and for the first time in the game began to trouble the home defence. There seemed to be a glimmer of hope that Argyle might narrow the margin but on the hour mark, Argyle played themselves into trouble and Male swept home Thompson's right wing cross to put the result beyond doubt.
In fact, the University could have scored more in the last 15 minutes had it not been for a string of fine saves by Craig Mulholland in Okehampton's goal.
