Okehampton Argyle 3
Crediton Utd 0
THIS Good Friday local derby saw Argyle gain a convincing victory over a weakened Crediton side, who never gave up throughout the 90 minutes.
On a bright but cold afternoon, Okehampton eventually ran out fully deserved 3-0 winners and should have scored more, but a combination of poor finishing and good defensive work, especially from home keeper Lee Waring kept the score respectable.
The opening exchanges were fairly even with both sides having the odd half chance to open the scoring. Crediton saw one effort cleared off the line while at the other end Okehampton had a strong penalty appeal waved away, when Luke Alden appeared to be tripped in the box after taking on two defenders.
The opening goal came on 33 minutes after Argyle were awarded a free kick 25 yards out. Dale Chadwick's strong shot cannoned off the defensive wall with the ball deflecting to the left where it was controlled by Alden who then shot home from 15 yards to give Okehampton a deserved lead.
As half time approached, Argyle put some more good moves together and again threatened the home goal, but the closest they came was when Brad Ausden was released with just Waring to beat, but the keeper made a good save with his legs.
The second half saw Okehampton have the vast majority of the play and they sealed the win with two further goals. Twelve minutes after the restart, Ed Bradshaw beat the offside trap and then rounded Lee Waring before slotting low into the empty net.
Argyle then pressed Crediton back time and again, but the final goal did not come until the 62nd minute when a lovely move down the right saw Ross Hoyland feed the ball through to Alden who shot home from a tight angle to make it 3-0.
Okehampton continued to press and should have scored more before the final whistle but Crediton showed great resilience to keep the score respectable.
This was a good all round performance from Argyle with Luke Alden, Ed Squire and Ross Hoyland taking the eye in midfield and John Wiseman looking dangerous up front.
