Okehampton Argyle 3
Brixham AFC 1
OKEHAMPTON came from behind to get back to winning ways against a physical Brixham side at Simmons Park.
With Jason Cordice still out with his ankle ligament injury Argyle were dealt a blow when club captain Dale Chadwick had to pull out the night before the match (also with an ankle injury) as they set about halting their recent run of defeats.
There was little evidence to suggest that Okehampton had learnt their lessons from the previous weeks as they started poorly and it was no surprise that Brixham took the lead in the seventh minute courtesy of a close range finish from Matt Constable.
Slowly but surely Argyle got themselves into the game and both Tallan Burns and Adam Mortimer had already gone close when they were awarded a penalty in the 20th minute for a foul on Adam Mortimer, which Steve Kinsey despatched with aplomb.
The remainder of the half was pretty even with Tallan Burns and Oli Crimmins causing the Brixham full backs problems on the flanks and Brixham themselves looking dangerous with their height at set pieces.
Argyle started the second half as they had the first, poorly, and were lucky not to go behind for the second time when Matt Constable's header was ruled offside.
Again, Okehampton began to take control of the game, but the introduction of Roger Bonaparte in the 65th minute that was the turning point.
Tallan Burn's should have given Argyle the lead, when he raced onto Bonaparte's through ball, in the 75th minute, but he shot wide and Ed Squires missed an even better chance five minutes later.
The breakthrough finally came in the 87th minute when Ed Squires put in Roger Bonaparte and the veteran striker lashed home his first goal for the club, much to the delight of his team mates. As Brixham pushed forward in search of an equaliser, they were caught on the break when Chris Wills sent Tallen Burns racing clear down the left and his driven cross was gleefully rammed home at the far post by Adam Mortimer to seal the points for Oke.
Manager Kevin Taylor was delighted with the way his side had bounced back from going behind to take control of the game and deservedly take the three points by coming on strong in the closing stages.
'With players coming back, the squad is looking a lot healthier and hopefully this result can kick start a decent run up to Christmas,' said Mr Taylor.
'What we have been missing is competition for places all over the pitch and once we have that we'll have the consistency in performances we have been looking for.'
