THE 2014 Okehampton Sports and Fitness Festival is fast approaching, and with more than 40 different sports and activities to try out, it promises to be a fantastic week of events. In its fourteenth year, the festival, run by OCRA, has a range of have-a-go sessions and competitions running from this Saturday (July 5) to Sunday, July 13. Working with local clubs, instructors and facilities, OCRA has come up with a diverse programme for children, young people and adults alike. Stuart Lord from OCRA said: 'There are lots of new activities to try like Thai Chi, a children's triathlon and a roller derby. With activities for children, young people, adults and people with special needs, and lots of free to try sessions, there really is something for everyone.' The festival's activities kick off with the Okehampton Skate Jam at Okehampton Skate Park this Saturday. The event gives young people the chance to free skate, compete and enjoy each other's company. Skating and competitions will run from 11am to 4pm with music, food stalls, and a skating product giveaway. Entry costs £2, for more information call 01837 55778. Also on Saturday, there will be tennis sessions for children and mums in the morning, and trampolining at Okehampton College gym in the afternoon. England's cricket team may not have had the best of fortunes recently, but a six-a-side cricket tournament will take place on Sunday (July 6), and on the same day Parklands Leisure Centre will host a water polo session. The activities keep coming thick and fast, with judo sessions for all ages and a badminton doubles tournament on July 7, and racketball, netball, fencing, kick boxing karate, Thai Chi, dancercise and a cycling time trial on Tuesday, July 8. The ten mile cycle time trial takes place that evening at 6.30pm. Whatever your type of bike or cycling experience, riders are invited to record a time. The event is for adults and young people aged 12 and over, though parental consent is required for anyone under 18. Riders will meet on the old A30 at the bus stop before Bridestowe, with entry costing £2. For more information call 01837 871309. A ladies' netball tournament takes place on the college's all weather pitches at 6.45pm, with entrants available to enter as teams or individuals. The fun evening at Okehampton Squash and Racketball Club from 6.20pm to 7.40pm will give people of all ages the chance to try out racketball, with equipment and coaching provided on the night.  On July 9, the squash club will hold a handicap squash competition. All players are welcome and given an appropriate handicap, and get at least two different games. Hatherleigh Cricket Club will get involved on July 9 with a cricket festival from 10am. Other sessions going on that day include table tennis, try archery and rush hockey, a new form of the sport. Okehampton Golf Club will tee off its new GC2 golf simulator on Thursday, July 10 with a free session for young people and adults. This is a great opportunity for players of all abilities, and those who have never tried the game before. All equipment is provided. The perennial favourite, the adults' mixed rounders tournament, returns on Thursday, July 10 for a great night of fun. Each team can have up to nine players with five of one sex and four of the other. Friday, July 11 continues the busy programme of events with a leisurely morning walk from the pavilion, touch rugby, volleyball, a multi-activity action club, and a swimming competition. For youngsters wanting to try a pursuit on the water, there is sailing and windsurfing on Roadford Lake on Saturday, July 12. There is a session for six to eight year olds in the sailing, and for eight to 16-year-olds in both sailing and windsurfing. The main day of activity is the Super Sporting Sunday in Simmons Park on Sunday, July 13. Taking place in the park, Parklands Leisure Centre and the OCRA pavilion, the event always offers a huge range of sessions for people to come along to. The mixed hockey and men's football tournaments make their return, and there will be a huge range of activities on offer for the whole family.
