• Tuesday July 28, 10am-2:30pm at Charter Hall, Okehampton

Do you know where your stopcocks are? (Do you even know what a stopcock is?) How do you change a tyre? What does credit card interest mean? When should you take your pet to the vets? What is tax and where does it all go (I’m sure there will be a few choice ideas!)? Who do you call for what kind of help?!

Okehampton Youth Council are putting together a day of interactive workshops and drop-in sessions to help with building skills needed to live independently and help in the transition to adulthood. The Workshops are not about careers or applying for jobs and universities, rather trying to build a list of practical hacks of all those little things that you just don’t know about unless you’ve been through it before.

The day is open to all, particularly focusing on secondary school and college leavers to pop in for all, or part, of the day. We will have sessions on offer looking at Bike Maintenance, Pet Care, Budgeting and Finances, Sewing Repairs, Preparing for End of Life, Calculating Carbon Footprint, Know Your Toolbox, Electrical and Plumbing Tips, Health and Wellbeing among others.

Skills Day is being supported by many local businesses and members of the community including Harry Hughes Plumbing, Okehampton Town Council Parks team, Great Western Railway, Okehampton Police, Pump and Pedal, Mike Harding Lighting Solutions, OCRA and Transition Town Okehampton.

Please save the date and share with all younger people you know who could benefit from some pointers in the day-to-day life admin we need to do, the things you really benefit from knowing earlier in life to make everything else run as smoothly as possible. Plus, a little bit of how to look after yourself in the process!
