A GUIDE leader in Tavistock celebrated Girlguiding UK's centenary year by travelling to Lapland to experience a variety of extreme snow activities.

Zoe Viggers was chosen as one of 13 guides from across the UK to go to Lapland for the event Ultimate Lapland; Breaking the Ice.

Zoe, 24, said: 'It was one of the guides international opportunities, I just filled out a form and hoped for the best. There were people from all over the UK but I was the most southern.'

During the five-day trip, Zoe took part in a number of activities.

She said: 'We drove snow mobiles across a frozen lake, rode husky dogs which was absolutely brilliant, rode a sled with reindeer and sat in a few hot tubs. It was quite an experience.'

Zoe and the other guides also tried their hand at cross country skiing, snow-shoe races and a sea dip in a frozen gulf.

On her last evening in Lapland, Zoe had the chance to sleep overnight in a giant igloo, where the group sheltered from temperatures well below freezing.

The trip was one of more than 100 adventurous activities open to guiding's 550,000 members throughout the anniversary year.

Zoe, who has been a girl guide since the age of seven, said: 'This trip was a once in a lifetime experience, as it was the 100th year of guiding and I was very privileged to have celebrated it by spending five days in Lapland.'
