Devon Intermediate Cup round 2

South Zeal Utd 4

Faraway Utd 3 (aet)

THIS was a thriller neither team wanted or deserved to lose.

The game started with Zeal in control and it was no surprise when after ten minutes they went ahead. Brimacombe was put through and finished well, beating the Faraway keeper with a low, well placed shot.

Zeal could have been two or three up before Faraway equalised after 25 minutes. Faraway were gaining in confidence and using the slope and wind to their advantage. They deserved to go a goal up five minutes later after a good cross from the right was headed home.

Zeal now had their backs to the wall and did well to turn round only a goal down at half-time, Sanderson and Ware working overtime to contain the Faraway attack.

In the second half Zeal had the elements with them and pressured the away side but could not get the equaliser. But with only a few minutes to play Cann broke down the right and after a goalmouth scramble Garry Smith evened the scores from close range.

In extra time Zeal went ahead in the first period with a good finish by Vile and could have scored again when White beat several defenders only to see his shot well saved by the keeper.

Faraway visitors equalised with five minutes of extra time left and penalties looked inevitable but with a minute remaining Brimacombe pounced on a ball played between two defenders and finished well, putting Zeal into the next round

This week, home to Feniton, kick-off 2.30pm.
