TAVISTOCK Squash teams faced top of the league Clifton Hill from Exeter.
Conceding more than 20 years in age to four of their five opponents meant it was always going to be a difficult fixture, however pleasing it was to see younger players in the game.
First on court for Tavistock, the experienced Pete Walshe found the pace hard going and even his well crafted reverse angle shots and ball control could not save him from a 0-3 defeat.
Next on court, Pete Middleton, the team's rising star, found himself in a gruelling five-game match against an agile, youthful but somewhat tempestuous player from Clifton Hill.
Peter managed to hold his nerve, winning the match 9/7, 4/9, 4/9, 9/2, 9/7. This proved to be the team's only win of the night.
At third string Stuart Cox found it difficult to focus his game. Stuart went down 0-3.
The team's stalwart Colin Grice, playing at number two, took an early 2-0 lead 9/7, 9/8 before his opponent rallied, taking the next two 7/9, 7/9, to level the match. In the deciding game Colin had two match points but eventually lost 9/10.
The final match of the evening between Tim Wallis of Tavistock and a fit and accomplished young player from Clifton Hill, resulted in a straightforward 3-0 win to the Clifton man. Tim fought hard but found himself outmanoeuvred for most of the match.
Although suffering quite a heavy defeat at the hands of the league leaders, Tavistock have managed to retain their third league position as the season draws to a close.
