A VILLAGE youth club, which provided activities for young people for two decades, has been forced to close down because of a lack of interest from the community.

Secretary of the South Zeal club Sherri Henry was 'very disappointed' with the turnout at the recent AGM — make or break time for the club.

'Despite a plea for more help in the Okehampton Times, the community does not appear to want to keep it,' she said.

'People moan about crime and vandalism and youths hanging about but if there is nowhere for the young people to go what do they expect?

'No-one wants to provide anything — is two hours on a Tuesday evening really too much to ask.'

With numbers attending the youth club rising, the secretary who also actied as a youth worker, said it was a major blow for the young people.

'The kids are really disappointed,' she said.

Mrs Henry said there was a possibility of a youth leader being appointed through the county council but without more help and support the club would not re-open.
