THE West Devon tree wardens scheme is set to expand and grow new shoots throughout the borough.

Volunteers are being sought to help parish councils, environmental groups and the general public to take part in promoting trees within their community and increasing the number of trees within the borough.

Two tree wardening events are to be held at:

l Tavistock Guide Hall, on Thursday May 13, from 7pm to 9pm and,

l Cosdon Room, Ockment Centre, Okehampton, on Thursday May 27 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm

Existing and new volunteers are welcome.

The project is led by the Silvanus Trust?s Our Trees project in partnership with West Devon Borough Council.

Every year local environmental organisations and councils respond to many enquiries, which could be answered locally by trained volunteers who know the area and who could also gather useful information on special trees.

If you would like to be able to help the environment in this way, the scheme organisers would like to hear from you.

Other ideas for fun activities include old chestnuts such as tree planting, tree tagging in hedgerows, writing village tree trails and making a community book of significant trees together with their tales and legends.

You can become a tree warden in one of two ways. One way is to get yourself nominated by a parish council or by a local environmental group and the other is to contact West Devon Borough Council directly who will try and find a group or council to ?adopt? you.

The West Devon group is part of the larger national scheme run by the Tree Council and supported by the National Grid.

Contact Silvanus Trust on 01579 372100 to confirm your attendance. Tea and coffee will be provided.
