Some of West Devon?s hidden tourist attractions are looking for people to join them ? either as a visitor or a volunteer. There are more community museums in Devon than anywhere else in the country, and most are staffed by volunteers. In West Devon there are seven independent museums ? Tavistock Museum, the Robey Trust, the Museum of Dartmoor Life, Morwellham Quay, Devon and Cornwall Constabulary Heritage Resource in Okehampton, Dingles Stream Village and the Dartmoor Prison Heritage Centre. Morwellham Quay is well-known and attracts thousands of visitors, but many of the others are better known by visitors to the area than by local people. Community museums officer Mary Godwin said: ?This is National Volunteers Week and what better time than now to pop along to your local museum, find out what it has to offer, and then to see if you can spare some time to help out. ?These museums are a wonderful local resource for people of all ages yet many people have never visited and may even be unaware that they exist, even though they are right on their doorstep.? Volunteering England celebrated with the country?s 22 million volunteers for the 23rd annual Volunteers? Week this week.. The theme of the week was to ?recognise, reward and recruit? and enabled organisations and charities to publicly acknowledge the hard work of their volunteers. A recent poll on the Volunteers? Week website revealed that volunteer appreciation was the most compelling reason why Volunteers? Week matters. Engaging with the local community and raising the profile of volunteering opportunities were the next most popular claims. Mary Godwin added: ?We could not keep our community museums open without the hard work of our volunteers, and I know they would appreciate more people coming forward to help them run these wonderful places.?
