Tavistock girls . . . . . .4

Lipson United . . . . . . 0

HISTORY was in the making on Saturday with the first ever mini soccer match played at Crowndale on the new mini soccer pitches.

Tavistock settled down first and dominated the game with both Robyn Hammond and Becks Rose getting shots in. With the defence of Vanessa Davey, Hannah Smith and Sophie Bassett, Frankie Foster in goal did not have much to do. Davey put in some tremendous tackling and took the ball upfield. A good clearance from Bassett saw Rose streak off towards goal, round two players and shoot low into the net.

Sian Langman in midfield settled down and played an important part in keeping possession of the ball.

Shortly before half time Emma Hyde joined the team and helped keep the ball upfield.

Tavistock worked the ball up and once again found the foot of Rose who placed the ball into the net.

After a fine save and kick out from Foster, Smith knocked on to Hammond who ran from her own half rounding players to slam the ball home. Davey worked her socks off and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. Rose moved up from her defensive position to finish off her hat trick after a fine cross from Hammond.

Player of the match went to Robyn Hammond.

Tavistock Girls . . . . . .1

THIS was a tough draw for Tavistock girls? first match, having only beaten league runners-up Staddiscombe once last year, and also playing without captain Chloe Bassett and retired veteran Megan Blackmore.

Paige McGechie made her debut for the girls as left back and showed her potential as a good tackler.

At the back the sheer pace of Sarah Barrett closed up most attacks and with the support of Joy Page, who never stopped tackling, took the ball upfield with great confidence.

The goal came after 15 minutes of hard fought play when KIm Davey struck the ball between two defenders to hit low in the back of the net.

Tavistock fought hard in the second half to hold on to their lead and with the experience and strength of Clarice Payne, who played some fine football, they held strong. But it was stand in captain Robynne Honey who saved the points when Staddiscombe broke through in the dying minutes of the game to make a very brave diving save at the striker?s feet.

A fine team performance for their first match.

Player of the match went to Joy Page.
