North Tawton Over 35s 7
NORTH Tawton held their annual 'oldies' versus 'youngsters' entertaining fixture on Boxing Day.
A good crowd saw the 'Legends', as the over 35s like to call themselves, take on the younger members of the club.
Played in excellent spirit the over 35s obviously provided a tight forward game against a full running Under 30s.
It was the youngsters who, with a free flowing move, saw Del Matravers at outside centre finish off a good move for a try.
Then the 'Legends' put the pressure on the Under 30s up front, with the old combination of Rod Stoddart and Chris Fear in the front row making experience felt.
Two quick penalties saw the Under 30s failing to retreat the required 10 metres and a penalty try under the posts was converted by Joe Fewings to give the 'Legends' a 7-5 lead at half-time.
With this entertaining game going end to end it looked likely that the over 35s might hold on.
But with 10 minutes to go an excellent breakout by Phil Walt at scrum half saw him put through John Stone at outside half. The youngsters pinched the lead with a try.
This festive match was organised by club coach Pete Hoggins and refereed with great tolerance by club captain Dai Roberts.
Men of the match for both sides were the scrum halves, David Knott for the 'Legends' and Phil Walt for the Under 30s.
